From The Times on June 30:
Alyssa Speichert, 18, was at the head of the class at Hanover Central High School.
The daughter of Karry and Cindy Speichert, of Cedar Lake, and 2010 graduate, earned a 4.14 grade point average and represented her class as co-valedictorian.
She spoke at commencement exercises about the need to focus more on the present instead of always planning for the future. “Planning for the future takes time away from enjoying the present,” she reminded her classmates.
Speichert was one of three Distinguished Honors Diploma candidates at HC this year. She received the Dollars for Scholars Judith Lueder Scholarship, Fraternal Order of Eagles Award, a Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship, IU Excellence Scholarship, IU Valedictorian Award, IU Hutton Honor College Scholarship and is the Cedar Lake Junior Miss Scholastic Achievement winner. Speichert will double major in American studies and criminal justice at Indiana University in Bloomington.
At Hanover, Speichert was vice president of National Honor Society, involved in Key Club and played golf all four years. She played saxophone and clarinet in band throughout high school, was inducted into Thespian Society and received the prestigious John Phillips Sousa Award.
Speichert competed in Indiana State School Music Association competitions in both the solo and ensemble categories. She advanced from district to state contests several times and this past year her ensemble received a gold rating. She also played with the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony Orchestra and is an instrumentalist for her parish, Holy Name Catholic Church in Cedar Lake.
Speichert volunteers with Knights of Columbus Marian Council 3840 in Cedar Lake and is on the golf cart staff at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point.
